Here's how it looked on the day we moved in:
So when we moved in there was orange carpet on the floor, pink woodchip wallpaper on the walls, artex ceiling, floral curtains, a wall of 1960's wardrobes and a very dodgy lampshade. Why all this didn't put us off the house I don't know, that 1st day we moved in I remember thinking "why the hell have we moved here??"
Anyway the day we moved in Max dismantled all the furniture and put it in a pile outside destined for the skip (save for the bedside cabinet which I sold on eBay $$$). We took down the curtain poles, and lampshade ready to strip the walls. A lot of the wallpaper came off easily and to be honest that was easy compared to the amount of filling and sanding we had to do once it was all off. That first day we unearthed a few cracks beneath the paper which made us question whether the house was actually being held together by the woodchip...anyhow it was nothing a bit of caulk couldn't handle ;)
Over the next week we took off the remainder of the paper- filled the big cracks and sanded the walls:
We then decided the walls were in too bad a state to simply fill and paint and because we couldn't afford to get them re-plastered we decided to put lining paper up and pain that. Well let's just say any couple who's relationship can withstand lining a whole room are destined to stay together forever (we were on a fine line!)
The whole thing was comedy- it bubbled, it creased, it ripped, it didn't join together at the edges, someone dropped paper paste-side-down on my freshly washed hair (when you haven't got a working bathroom- rewashing it isn't really an option!) and generally was a mess. But we started so we had to finish.
Looking back now the walls would have looked 10 times better without the paper (because we did such a bad job) but we have learnt from experience and when the rest of the house is done we will go back and actually have the walls plastered.
This is the room after we had finished the paper and painted it in Crown Petit Palais - Parfait
which is a sort of pink-mushroom colour which which we both really love:
In these pictures we have had the new carpet put in- a deep pile cream carpet for a bit of luxury from our local carpet shop Crisitni carpets. The total cost including the underlay and fitting was £350.We had a long strip left over as our room is 4m10cm and the roll comes in 4m we had to have it cut the other way, meaning it cost more money. But we have reused the strip here. The new light switch is the same chrome toggle switch we have used throughout the house in the rooms we have renovated so far:
Then we got some new furniture from Ikea:
This large set of drawers cost £200 and to save on delivery we brought it home in the little car- probably illegal! |
This is the room as it looks now- the bedside cabinets are also from Ikea and cost about £39 each, as are the table lamps! The kingsize bed and headboard came from a rental house I used to live in - the landlord was getting rid of all the furniture so I took this. Max's mum very kindly recovered it in velvet to match the colour scheme. She also had the white venetian blinds made for us as the windows are very wide it wasn't possible to buy anything on the high street. The ottoman was from Dunelm Mill- its cream suede(ette) and was a bargain price of £39! Cats were free from a rescue home..
The wardrobe was from Tesco Direct, and was in the sale for £100. I bought the handles from Ikea to match the other furniture (except they cant sit next to each other as this is white and the Ikea stuff is off white!)
Some finishing touches to the room:
An orchid and pot both from Ikea. It did die but has recently started re-growing! |
A lamp from TK Maxx- picture frame Wilkinsons |
Little white chair from a vintage shop- currently being used as an office chair in the other bedroom |
This little door opens into a quite a big little hatch of under the eves storage. Max keeps his work shirts in there and I keep my shoes. The M & L are Posh Graffiti from a little shop in York.
So that's it. Eventually when we have done everything else we will come back to this room and re plaster it. Also just before Christmas we had a leak in the flat roof near the door which means a big patch of the ceiling came down which we have yet to replace! Once we have done that we will get some curtains as well as the blinds, in the meantime I am thinking of a purchase of an armchair or hat stand to go in the corner where the little white chair used to be...
Well you don't want to inhale plaster dust! |
